Stock Market Update Friday May 16, 2025 Equities extended their impressive rally, with the S&P 500 climbing 0.6% to close out the week up 2.2%, reinforcing bullish momentum and driving the index deeper into positive year-to-date territory.
On the session, the S&P 500 gained 0.7%, the Nasdaq-100 added 0.4%, and the Russell 2000 outperformed with a 0.9% advance.
Away From Stocks: In fixed income, the Treasury curve offered a mixed read: the 2-year yield inched up to 3.98% from 3.96%, while the 30-year yield slipped two basis points to 4.89%, reflecting modest flattening. Commodities and digital assets were relatively rangebound—WTI crude traded near $62 per barrel, gold softened below the $3,200 mark, and Bitcoin held steady around $103,000. Meanwhile, the VIX notched new post-"Liberation Day" lows, settling near 17 and signaling subdued volatility expectations.
